7 Dog Products That Are Actually Worth the Money

I feel like every time I look for something for my dog, there are about a million options.

And somehow they all claim to be the best, healthiest, most natural, most durable thing you could possibly buy.

Obviously, they can’t all be.

I’ve also realized that having a dog makes it really easy to buy things you don’t need. A cute toy here, a new chew there, another grooming product because TikTok said it’s amazing… and suddenly you have an entire basket of dog stuff nobody uses.

That’s part of why I started Greener Pawz.

I wanted somewhere I could share the things I genuinely think are worth buying, find better options when they’re available, and hopefully make shopping for your dog a little less overwhelming.

So these are seven things I actually think are worth spending money on.

1. A Good Leash

This is probably the most boring thing on the list, but that’s kind of the point.

You’re going to use your dog’s leash constantly. I’d much rather have one really good leash that lasts for years than keep buying cheap ones because the clip breaks, the handle is uncomfortable, or the material starts falling apart.

You definitely don’t need to spend a ridiculous amount on one, either.

I mainly look for something comfortable, durable, easy to clean and with hardware that doesn’t feel like it’s going to break after six months.

2. Something That Actually Keeps Them Busy

I love dog toys, but I swear some of them entertain the dog for approximately four minutes and then become another object on the floor.

I’d rather spend money on something that actually gives them something to do.

Puzzle toys, lick mats, food toys and other enrichment products can be great, especially when you’re trying to keep your dog occupied without constantly throwing a ball across the living room.

But I don’t think you need the craziest puzzle you can find.

If your dog loves a simple toy that you can fill with food and use over and over again, that’s probably a better purchase than something complicated they don’t understand or care about.

3. A Dog Bed You Can Actually Wash

I have learned that anything made for a dog should probably be washable.

Beds especially.

They’re going to get dirty. They’re going to smell eventually. And depending on your dog, they might get covered in things you don’t even want to identify.

So if I’m spending decent money on a bed, I want to be able to take the cover off and wash it.

I also think durability matters way more than having the cutest bed on Pinterest.

If your dog destroys fluffy beds, please stop buying the fluffy beds.

4. A Good Long-Lasting Chew

This is one category where I probably research things more than I need to.

There are SO many dog chews, and I’m not comfortable giving my dog something just because the package says it’s natural.

I want to know what it is, what’s in it, where it comes from and whether it’s actually appropriate for my dog.

And obviously, no chew is completely risk-free. Size and chewing style matter, and I always think dogs should be supervised with them.

But finding one your dog loves that actually lasts longer than three minutes?

Absolutely worth it.

5. A Few Good Grooming Products

You really don’t need 15 different grooming products.

I’d rather have a good brush, a shampoo I feel comfortable using, something for nails and whatever else my specific dog actually needs.

That’s it.

This is another category where labels can get a little ridiculous. Something saying “natural” on the front doesn’t automatically mean I’m going to buy it.

I still want to look at what’s actually in it.

6. A Harness That Actually Fits

I used to think choosing a harness was mostly just finding one I liked the look of.

There is so much more to it than that.

Different dogs are built completely differently, and a harness that fits one dog perfectly can sit terribly on another.

So now I’d care way more about adjustability, comfort and how the dog actually moves in it than whether it’s the cutest one.

Cute is a bonus.

7. Something That Solves One Annoying Problem

This one’s intentionally vague because I think it’s different for every dog owner.

Maybe your dog dumps water everywhere, so it’s a better bowl.

Maybe your car looks like your dog actually lives in it, so it’s a washable seat cover.

Maybe you’re tired of carrying poop bags, treats, your phone, keys and everything else in your hands every time you go for a walk.

If there’s one little problem you deal with constantly, buying something that actually fixes it is usually worth more to me than buying another random dog toy.

So What Do I Actually Look For?

I’m definitely not saying everything you buy for your dog needs to be perfectly sustainable or completely natural.

That’s not realistic, and honestly I don’t want Greener Pawz to be like that.

I just think we can be a little more intentional about what we’re buying.

Will I actually use this?

Is it going to last?

Is it safe and appropriate for my dog?

Is there a better option that creates less waste?

Am I buying this because I need it… or because someone made a really convincing TikTok?

Sometimes the “greener” choice is something made from recycled material.

Sometimes it’s choosing a product with better ingredients.

And sometimes it’s literally just buying one good thing and using it for five years instead of buying five crappy ones.

That’s really what I want Greener Pawz to be about.

Not being a perfect dog owner.

Not making you feel guilty because your dog’s favorite toy happens to be plastic.

Just finding better stuff when we can, figuring out what’s actually worth our money, and taking good care of our dogs along the way.

Because there is already enough junk being sold to dog owners.

We don’t need more of it.
